By Your Command

A big thanks to Pooch and Reaper for the Christmas gifts they sent me this year, one of which was the uncut version of Battlestar Galactica: Razor on DVD. I had never watched the copy I recorded from the Sci-Fi channel back in November, so I checked out the DVD eagerly and was totally enthused. At last, they found a way to work in the old chrome toaster Cylons (complete with vocoded voices) from the original series!

To wit, here’s one of my favorite scenes from the film, courtesy of YouTube (at least until NBC gets the clip pulled for violating copyright). If you aren’t a fan of the classic BSG, you probably won’t get it. Your loss.

  1. The only thing that clip is missing is Dirk Benedict.

  2. He should have played Admiral Cain’s XO — the one who took a bullet in the head when he disobeyed her orders. Cigar in his mouth and all. Would have been a great metaphor for Dirk’s disgust with the new series in general. :D

  3. Why does Dirk hate the new series? I remember reading Richard Hatch hated the new series as well, but then he ended up playing Tom Zarek (or whatever his character’s name was). Is it the whole “ultra grim” outlook of the series, as opposed to Lorne Green and John Calicos chewing scenery for an hour? Or is it the lack of dudes in waaaay too short-shorts running around and throwing a ball into a hole in the wall?

  4. Oh God, those Triad matches made me shiver. Like a bad porno based on American Gladiators.

I think Dirk hated the new series initially because they replaced his character with a woman. I think, though, he was just pissed because they replaced his character with someone who wasn’t him. He’s also come out against the dark and serious nature of the show, and said the fun-loving style of the original was the way to go.

    I can’t say I agree with Dirk…on any point.

  5. Re: the “dark and gritty” nature of the new show, I agree with something I read some time ago (may have been on the TWoP boards) — these are the final remnants of the human race, on the run from a band of machines that want to eradicate them completely. Why would everything be fun and games in that kind of situation? Obviously there will be moments of joy and levity, but it wouldn’t be the norm when your main priority is survival.

And for the record, I don’t think there could be such a thing as a “good” porno based on American Gladiators. =P

  6. Yeah, I suppose you’re right about the porno thing. Geesh. I can’t believe they’re bringing American Gladiators back. But with guys like Ron Moore on strike, I guess I shouldn’t be surprised.

Totally agree about the dark and gritty nature having real motivation. I mean, seriously. They’re making a show about the possible extinction of the human race; why should it be predominantly happy? It’s like the jokes I’ve often heard the pilot episode of the classic BSG. The human race is nearly wiped out, barely managing to get away with a few ragged ships. What’s the first thing they do? Visit the casino planet, so Starbuck can smoke a stogie and Apollo can score a babe!
