Subaru, WTF?
Dude, can someone please assure me that these AutoWeek photos of the 2008 Subaru Impreza and Impreza WRX are an April Fool’s Day joke? Please? …Please?
The sedan is bearable, still a tremendous step down in design (IMO) from the handsome previous generation, but truly, what in God’s name is with that hatchback? Is it going to tiptoe through a rally stage?

eewww. EEWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW….
even being the not-car person that I am, I have no love for that. Reaper better not get any ideas.
here’s hoping it was just an April Fool’s prank.
I hope it was too, but chances are looking increasingly bleak. For the first time I think I like the Mitsubishi Evo better. The Evo X looks fascinating.
BTW, I heard about the house. Major congratulations! When’re you moving in?
The new WRX looks very similar (in body shape, anyway) to the Peugeot 206/307 and Ford Focus that gets used for rallies. At least that’s how it see it. Whatever happened to making your car look cool and unique?
And by “cool and unique,” I don’t mean outfitting it with coffee-can exhaust tips, incongruous badges, and triple-deck spoilers.
I can easily see the resemblance to the numerous compact hatchbacks already running on rally circuits (in fact, yesterday I saw a few concept drawings of that new Subaru hatchback in STi trim). What throws me is why Subaru would ever want to imitate any of them when they have their own distinctive (and much more appealing, IMO) style. Perhaps it’s a size or a weight issue, or maybe the whole design comes down to technical advantages.
Word on the ‘net is that reaction to this design among Subaru die-hards is almost 75% against…not good…
Still, maybe it’s one of those things that grows on you. I’m not saying I could never like it, but I doubt I’ll ever like it as much as the previous generation (like Reaper’s).
Ooh.. That was butt-ugly. I’ll stick to admiring the pre-2006 era. If they wanted to fix the damage they did with the new 2006 style, this certainly wasn’t the way to go.
