New HD Channels in Southwest Florida?

For months now, I’ve been anxiously awaiting Comcast’s launch of several new high definition channels in our area of Southwest Florida. The upgrades have been appearing in markets all over the country, but SWFL was left high and dry…until now. If the Zap2it TV listings are to be believed, our market has finally been gifted with ESPN2 HD, A&E HD, National Geographic HD, and the long-awaited Universal HD.

Universal HD is, of course, the channel that’s playing high definition episodes of the new Battlestar Galactica. They’re usually about half a season behind the new eps running on Sci-Fi — for example, right now they’re showing episodes from Season 3.0, which was last fall — but for the opportunity to see my favorite show in its native format, I’d start over at the beginning! Since BSG is actually shot in HD, this isn’t a simple upconvert — it’s the real deal. Also, UHD has been running Firefly episodes in HD, one of my favorite (and most underrated) sci-fi shows from a few years back. Should be a good time.

Sadly, high def upconverts of Knight Rider are no longer being aired. :(

Then there’s A&E HD, which is currently playing some other halfway decent shows, like CSI: Miami, The Sopranos (hate to see how heavily edited those must be), and some movies that could prove interesting. The lineup is a lot like TNT HD.

Since we’ve had very little HDTV content until now, any additions are more than welcome. Now I just hope Zap2it isn’t lying. They’ve been wrong before…

  1. You’re not geeked about potentially being able to see 500 hours of poker in HD on ESPN2? I mean, there’s nothing more thrilling than seeing a bunch of dudes sitting around and looking at each other for two hours in hi def. :)
