The Pontiac G8 Debuts

At the Chicago Auto Show today, Pontiac unveiled its all-new G8 sedan, the 2008 model year replacement for the Grand Prix. As many of us aficionados have long known, the G8 is based on the next-generation Holden Commodore, which in and of itself is a very svelte and muscular grocery-getter. Now we finally know what the Pontiac version of the Commodore will look like.

Unconfirmed Facts / Rumors

  • Possible direct injection on V6. V8 may get Active Fuel Management technology.
  • Optional sport package (available on base or GT) adds a rear wing.
  • 6-speed manual option won’t be available right away.
  • G8 may get more distinct design changes once production is moved to Canada in 2010.
  • GXP version is coming. Possible 6.3L, 400+ hp engine?
  • Next-generation GTO likely to be a coupe version of this car.

The G8 is slated to go on sale in August of this year, and start arriving in showrooms in early 2008. And I, for one, am happy that the Pontiac mainstream sedan (nee Grand Prix) has returned to its sporty roots.

  1. I think it hawt! Well except for maybe the tail lights, will those ever return back to normal?

  2. I’m not really feeling the taillights either — and they actually look the same as the Holden, which surprises me because usually Pontiac does something slightly different there. Other than that I think the car’s a huge improvement over the current Grand Prix. If Pontiac became “Holden North America” I would not be a bit sorry…
