High Definition Happiness
Posted by Chief Oddball in the afternoon on December 28th, 2006Tomorrow, my 57″ HDTV finally earns a purpose. A Comcast tech will be stopping by in the afternoon to deliver my new high definition DVR, which will enable me to receive HDTV channels and also record HD programs. Due to shortages, it’s taken over a month for the HD equipment to actually become available in this area. If all goes according to plan, though, by this time tomorrow, I’ll finally know what HDTV is all about.
Not that I’ve never pushed a high-def signal through my TV; I play games in 1080i with my Xbox360 all the time. But I’ve only had the 360 for a year, and prior to that, I had no idea what my (rather expensive) TV could really do. If HDTV looks anywhere near as good as the games I play, I’ll be one happy camper.
I called Comcast this afternoon to make sure the appointment was still set up, and to ask if they could tell me what model DVR box I’ll get. The service rep wasn’t able to answer the latter question for certain, but mentioned that it was most likely to be a Scientific Atlanta 8300HD. That’s exactly the box I want, so I had her enter a note to the tech to “supply 8300HD if possible.” Realistically, I think the only other HD-capable DVR that Comcast offers in this area is the somewhat older SA 8000HD, which would still be fine…but I want the 8300 for its superior array of outputs, and the ability to expand your DVR storage by attaching an external SATA hard disk.
Humorously, I just now received a computerized phone call from Comcast. “This is your cable company,” said the recording. “We’re calling to remind you of your upcoming appointment. Goodbye!” I burst out laughing. Wow, that’s a useful notification — if you had indeed forgotten your appointment, that message would be all but useless — since it doesn’t tell you what date and time your appointment was scheduled for! Oops.
I shall report back with news on how the HD goodness looks. I also have a bunch of other stuff I should post on here, now that I seem to have a somewhat quiet weekend (work-wise) coming up. But until I can go into further detail, I simply must issue “mad propz to mah homies” Pooch and Reaper, who got me a truly awesome array of Christmas gifts this year (I’ve been playing the Battlestar Galactica soundtrack nearly non-stop since). Thanks guys!
