New House Pre-Drywall Meeting

Filed under Temporary ··· Leave a Comment

Today we had our pre-drywall meeting with the field manager and design coordinator on our new house. I admit to feeling a fair amount of stress in recent days regarding all things real estate related, including some issues I was having with the exterior color we’d chosen for the home. I’m happy to say that after the meeting today, both Apple and I had a lot of our worries assuaged.

The developer recently finished building and furnishing their official model home, and we got a chance to take a look inside of it today. Needless to say, the place is extremely well done. What struck me the most about it, though, were the exterior colors. Each house gets a two-tone look with an exterior wall color and a separate band color. I was already having doubts about the color we’d picked for our place, but when I saw this model, I was like “Dang…that’s the color I’ve had in my mind this entire time!”

Fortunately, our exterior paint hadn’t been ordered yet, and our design coordinator was happy to change the color selections for us. I am really stoked about this. Living in a Taco Bell-themed house for the last five years (bright yellow walls, bright orange roof) is getting old, and I want to go with something nice and muted on the new place. Like a dummy I forgot to take any pictures of the model, but we’ll go back and get some, perhaps this weekend.

At Least It Would Have Been Interesting

It’s a long story how I actually happened upon this, but over at Unexplainable.net, there’s a little (rather poorly-written) article on how Michigan is one of the most haunted states in the country. Early on, you’ll find this paragraph:

When passing through the city of Dearborn, you will find the Divine Child High School holds a tale regarding a haunted gym. When the gym of the school was being remodeled, a construction worker died from head injuries sustained from falling from scaffolding. Many have claimed to see his ghost located on the catwalk during the night. Many have said that it feels as if someone is watching you when you walk down the hallways of the high school. Others claim that janitor equipment can be found in front of empty, lit-up rooms. When someone enters one of these rooms, odd messages are scrawled on the chalkboards.

Wow, I wish this stuff would have been true back when I was going to school there. It would have made things a hell of a lot more interesting. Although, upon further consideration, I admit that it did feel like I was being watched when I walked through the halls. Watched by the teachers, who would dole out criticism and punishment if you didn’t make it to your next class within the mere seconds they gave you.

They started building that gym pretty much right after I graduated, and I haven’t been within a mile of the place since. If the school is haunted, I have to say I feel sorry for those ghosts. Having to be stuck wandering around the afterlife at that place is a fate that should be reserved for rapists and murderers, not day laborers.

Keeping Upbeat

Maintaining a positive attitude? Well, it’s not an act reserved just for those corny motivational posters. I approached this day with an upbeat frame of mind and I swear it’s been one of the best days I’ve had in weeks.

Actually, this sorta started last night, ironically after a rather lousy morning. I had a restless sleep on Sunday night, and as a result on Monday I was pretty dead. By Monday night, however, I had mysteriously come alive, to the point where I actually worked myself ahead of schedule on that medical software website project I mentioned last time around.

Today I put a solid eight hours of work in on the new application design for my day job, and am quite pleased with the result — I had been putting this off because I was not at all looking forward to it, but after giving my brain a chance to recharge I’m finding I actually have some decent creative ideas. Then, this evening, I got even further ahead on that medical website, to the point where I’m ready to request a final bit of information from the client on wrapping it up.

Another contributing factor to my mood today was the weather. Finally, the cool, crisp autumn temperatures have arrived in southwest Florida. Today was just a teaser — it’s going to warm up again for the next few days — but by the weekend another cold front is coming, and we might actually set some record lows. It was in the mid ’70s today, and having the windows open and getting that fresh air circulating through the house was envigorating like nothing else I can describe. Plus, our de-cluttering of our house (in preparation for moving) makes it easier to think, live and work here, without the constant distraction of so much stuff everywhere. I think I like it this way.

Lastly, a little automotive commentary. If a Subaru STi turbo mill and AWD drivetrain in a 2,000-lb. roadster with an amazingly killer style sounds good to you, check out the Murtaya prototype from Adrenaline Motorsport (a UK-based developer). Mmmm, delish.

Hello, My Name Is _________

Filed under Rants ··· 2 Comments

Who am I? In the last few days, you might have gotten a different answer from me depending on when you’d asked. Between Apple and I, it feels like we’ve accomplished more in the last 48 hours than either of us usually gets done in a week. I haven’t posted anything here in a few days, so I thought I might regale you with some details of what all has happened in that span of time. Fair warning: I’m feeling a bit ranty, folks, and with a dash of unchecked tangenting at that, so this could be a lengthy entry.

The Fun Begins

It was a busy week. Apple started her new job, and I got more deeply engrossed in mine after receiving a large spate of new tasks late last Sunday. Come Friday I had cleared several things off my “to do” list at the office, but had one last thing to finish up. It’s a double-sided, letter-sized marketing document that explains what we do as a company, in simple terms. Since I’m starting a grueling new multi-week assignment tomorrow that’s quite possibly the most important thing I’ll do for my company all year, I decided that I’d wrap up that marketing document on Saturday, then spend all of Sunday working on my last outstanding side project. But first, I was going to get up early and go take some pictures of my GTO with its new license plate adornment.

All was going well on Saturday morning. I picked up the GTO and drove over to the county’s new waterpark and sports complex, which is basically a huge plot of land filled with nicely-manicured grass, soccer fields, baseball diamonds and what-have-you. Unfortunately the most scenic parts of the park were still roped off (it’s still under construction), so I had to settle for one of the less-populated parking areas to take my new photoset. I’ve uploaded all of the new pics to the Photo Gallery if you’d like to see them.

Holden Homage

Eons ago, I had a poll on here asking people what message they thought I should put on the personalized license plate I was going to order for my new GTO. I’d had a plate on my Trans Am that read BJ’S WS6 for many years but wanted something a little “smarter” this time around. Admittedly, in the end, I eschewed the various poll choices entirely because I found the perfect solution — a play on the name of the actual manufacturer of the new GTO, Holden Australia.

After a nine-week wait, I finally got the plate today — and to illustrate, here’s a shot of the garage the goat currently shares with my dad’s WS6.

Holden on, indeed.

Happy Stuff

Filed under Temporary ··· Leave a Comment

Things were looking rather dismal for a while there last week, and while our problems have far from melted completely away, at least now Apple and I have a plan and we’re executing it. We’re getting stuff done and feeling like we’re going somewhere, and while sometimes the crushing weight of all these responsibilities makes it hard to be cheerful, at least we’ve started to learn how to handle it.

Anyway, to compensate for some of the lousy news and foul emotions lately — although I haven’t spread much of that here, because it would have been just too damn negative — I thought I’d post up some Happy Stuff™ that’s also happened recently.

Exeter, Series X-2400C2D

First of all, I never really mentioned my new computer, powered by Intel’s Core 2 Duo E6600 processor. It arrived a couple of weeks ago, encased in a piano black Antec P180 and brimming with svelteness. Utilizing some overnight hours, I completely platformed it for work in record time (less than two days) and have had next to no issues with it since.

I name all of my computers, partially for identification on the LAN, and partially for fun. My last machine was Shodan, and predating that, Xerxes. This one I’ve dubbed Exeter. Since I run a closed web server on it, with a home page providing links to my various local project directories, I designed a system logo for the page. I had previously used the Xerxes system logo from System Shock 2, and since I consider Exeter to be of similar lineage, I borrowed from that design style in the creation of this one.

He’s Got The Touch

I was browsing the Agony Booth forums today and saw this little gem:

Stan Bush Working On Possible New Song For Transformers Movie

All I have to say is: YEEEAAAAAAHHH, YEEEEEEAAAAAAAAH!

Also: WILFORD BRIMLEY OATMEAL SLAM!

Edit: This is the ultimate in cheesy, bad ’80s music videos. That means, of course, that it’s probably the greatest thing ever.

I’ve Sold Myself Out!

I’ve put advertising on Oddball Update! Oh dear God!

Well, at least it’s not LinkExchange or some retro-grade ’90s trendy crap like that (does LinkExchange even still exist?). I’ve decided to post an ad for our house on this site, in the hopes that it may drive even a few more eyeballs to it. Honestly, over the last few weeks I (and Apple too, I’m sure) have felt not unlike a wounded soldier staggering up the beach at Normandy while trying to hold his entrails in. This stuff with selling the house, moving, etc…it’s all taking a huge toll.

Not the least of the reasons for which, I might add, is the fact that it seems the market will not bear anything close to the price we thought we’d get for our home. We’re gonna be in some pretty bad financial shape once we get moved, unfortunately. We’ve even talked about things only people in dire, dire straits should ever talk about…things like like moving out of Florida entirely, or selling my GTO just to save that many more dollars a month in expenses. Seriously folks, it’s bad. But we’re committed, because even if we back out now, we lose mega money. So the best thing is to go forward and hope for the best.

I must credit Apple for her strength of will in keeping sane during all this, and for her recent pursuit of a new career to further help us out with our financial situation. With her income we truly have no reason to be worried, but for all of our lives we’ve been very committed to all of those financial “best practices” you always hear about, and having to live on the edge (like so many Americans already do) leaves a bitter taste in our mouths. As least we’re keeping one thing in mind, as they said in Session 9: “Whatever you do in life, have an exit plan.”

So anyway, I’ve put a little ad banner image over there on the sidebar that leads to a site with more info about our home for sale. Maybe some traffic will be picked up. Maybe not. But I’d really rather somebody find our house this way and offer to buy it, as opposed to some realtor finding us in the MLS — because then, we get to pay $15,000 in commissions. With money as tight as it is already, just hearing the word “commission” is making my blood boil. So I’ll take any chance I can to bring my own buyers to the table first.

Maybe I should go for a ride in the goat this weekend. Just in case there aren’t many more rides left, y’know? Maybe that reunion story will come true, and I’ll have a Toyota parked in the garage…bleck. I think I’ll sell my bed first.
