The Things You Learn…

Well, I guess it’s up to me to keep the posts going for the time being. Lucky you.

The Hit ParadeI’ve been doing some digging into all things Puffy lately (I had a reason…really), and I found out some odd things about their album The Hit Parade. The album itself is full of cover tunes, i.e. songs made popular by other Japanese artists, but that’s not what’s odd. What is odd was finding out where some of the songs originally came from. For example, the third track on the disc, “Ai no Tomaranai ~Turn It Into Love~” is actually a cover of a Kylie Minogue song, of all things (apparently the J-Pop duo Wink covered the Kylie song, and it’s that particular Japanese version that Puffy covers). I must say, I never expected to learn of Puffy singing a Kylie Minogue tune.

Secondly, the track “Aishuu de Ito (NEW YORK CITY NIGHTS)” is another Japanese cover of a song originally done in English. This time, the track was (as far as I can tell) originally sung by Leif Garrett, a teen heartthrob from the late 1970s. Even more hilariously, one of the guys who wrote the song wrote all sorts of crappy ’60s soundtrack tunes like “Beach Blanket Bingo” (while the other guy credited with the song wrote another song called — and I am not making this up — “Get Rid O My Disco Fever”).

Lastly, imagine my surprise when I discovered the second-to-last track on the disc, “Choushou”, is a cover of a song originally done by none other than Takeshi Kitano. Yes, that Takeshi Kitano. I mean…wow.

And in order to make this post not totally Puffy related — and this is of interest to absolutely no one but myself (and even that’s questionable) — I finally found out what friggin’ blood type I am. That would be A+…coincidentally, that’s the same blood type that Ami and Yumi of Puffy are. Greaaaat. Thank God I’m not the creepy, obsessive stalker type, or that might be the kind of thing one might mistake as some sort of sign or something. “I’M A TRUE FAN I EVEN HAVE THE SAME BLOOD TYPE OMGWTFBBQ!!!1~~”

Edit - Oh my God, this stupid thing refuses to recognize the fucking image class whenever I try to input images — I have no idea why; I think I’m doing it right, but I guess not. Feel free to edit this to correct the image to your liking, Chief Oddball.

Edit #2 - Hey look! I corrected a spelling error and everything fucked up again! RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH!!!!!!

Final Edit - Thanks to Chief Oddball, everything is now okay in Oddball land. Crisis averted.

  1. I love tracking this kind of stuff back to its origins, oftentimes such truth is stranger (or more amusing!) than fiction. Hee…Lief Garrett, I don’t believe it. I had a similar epiphany yesterday when I realized this goofy “Babararacucudada!” song I once heard in a video came from an old Plymouth commercial. “I can’t pronounce Baccaruda!”

Oh, I fixed up the image alignment class. Out of curiosity — and forgive me if I asked this once before, because my brain is like scrambled eggs after this week — but when writing posts, do you use the visual editor (the one with the Word-like buttons and WYSIWYG appearance) or the plain textbox? I would imagine that the visual editor likes to throw CSS out. I had a bitch of a time just from teaching the Gulfstream folks how to use it, because it kept mucking up my HTML. I use the plain textbox meself. You can change that setting in your profile page if you prefer.

  2. Yes, finding out this stuff is quite funny sometimes. I really couldn’t believe the Kitano cover — I had no idea the man even sang. I just think of him as the dude from all the yakuza movies (and Battle Royale).

Naw, you never asked me which editor I used before, so don’t worry about it. =P From what I can tell, I’m using the plain textbox; at least, when I go to my profile page the “Use visual rich editor when writing” box is unchecked. I dunno. What happens is I’ll put the tag in there — in this case, the ‘class=”alignleft”‘ in the image properties after the usual “height=x”, etc., and when I hit “save & continue editing” or “publish” it strips the offending code right out. I have no idea why it happens. If you have any clues please let me know, because it’s quite infuriating.

I’m also browsing the whole Japanese blood type/personality crap page on Wikipedia, and it’s quite amusing. Apparently I’m supposed to be good with plants.

Edit: Woo! I screwed up again. I win at the internet.

  3. Good with plants, eh? Well, there ya go, d00d — all you have to do is set up a marijuana grow house and you’ll be rakin’ in the bucks. :p

I’m totally baffled about the editor stripping out the CSS class, because I can do that all day and it won’t mess around. I’ll run some tests and see if I can figure out what’s going on.

  4. Please do. Because, as you may have noticed, I corrected a spelling error and the text editor decided to go all funny again. I swear I’m never posting another image in one of my posts EVER AGAIN.

    Edit: Thank you.

  5. Fascinating! I created a test user with the same privileges as you, and now I am having the same problem. Again…fascinating. More testing underway.

  6. Okay man, I’ve fixed the problem. You’re all set to go. I’ll send along an email with the details behind what was going on, in case you care that much. ;)

  7. Sweet! Thanks a lot, dude!

For the record, your tweak works — I just discovered another error in my post and corrected it. And look! The image isn’t screwed up again! Huzzah!
