Radio, Radio

I was in my basement earlier — playing games on my Win98 box and listening to the radio. The station I was tuned to was a local college station that sometimes plays Puffy on the air (side note: if you think you’d be a horrible radio DJ, don’t worry — you’ll probably be no worse than the average college radio DJ). They didn’t play any Puffy while I was listening, but a couple of songs they did play took me back a few years: first, that timeless nugget from The Simpsons Sing The Blues, “Look At All Those Idiots” — a song I probably hadn’t heard since 1991 or so. I couldn’t believe it when I heard the song come on. Second, later on in the same show the DJ played the theme from the North American dub of Sailor Moon, an old high school favorite (additionally, the DJ let the disc play on after the theme ended, allowing listeners to hear the first 20 seconds or so of “I Want To Be A Star”, the second track from the original SM domestic soundtrack). I had to laugh out loud when I heard these two songs, because it was definitely not what I was expecting to hear.

If I was a lunatic conspiracy theorist, I’d say that the local college radio station has been studiously taking note of my listening habits over the last 15 years and then suitably arranging their playlist. In actuality, though, it was a show dedicated to soundtrack music (encompassing movies, anime and video games) and is thus not that odd of an occurrence at all. Still, though…The Simpsons Sing The Blues? Does anybody even own that album anymore (besides me, who has my cassette copy lying around here somewhere)? I thought it had been forgotten by history — guess I was wrong.

  1. The DiC Smoon album? The Simpsons Sing the Blues? I’m not sure what’s weirder…that, or those numbers stations! I love the part where the DJ let the Smoon album play onto track 2 for twenty seconds before he caught it. Too bad it wasn’t Stan, though.

Weirdly, I found a dub of one of the songs (”Born Under a Bad Sign”) from that awful Simpsons album on one of the mystery cassettes I was digitizing this week. Not that I needed a dub, because I still have the original album in my CD rack. Hehe…of course, “Look At All Those Idiots” was definitely my favorite track on the disc.

    Look at all those idiots!
Euuhhh, look at all those boobs.
    An office full of morons!
    A factory full of FOOLS!
    Is it any wonder!
    That I’m singing…singing the blues!

“They’re paying for their own coffee now, Smithers.”

  2. That would have been awesome if they’d played Stan — heck, they probably do at some point, because most of our generation seem to have an unhealthy love for Transformers: The Movie, and we all know that Stan is all over that thing.

Actually, I’m somewhat surprised they didn’t play the original Smoon theme, since they’d been playing Japanese-language anime music througout the show I was listening to (and, unfortunately, playing a large chunk of the Snakes on a Plane soundtrack). But considering the IQ levels of the DJs involved…maybe I’m not surprised (seriously, they had a “call-in poll” which was this: “If there’s an American version of something” — in this case, the Power Rangers — “would you call it ‘an American version of something” — as Power Rangers is the Americanized form of those silly Japanese sentai shows — “or would you simply call it by its title, Power Rangers?” They had a long discussion and everything.).

Strangely enough, “Look At All Those Idiots” used to be one of my favorites from that stupid Simpsons album, too. And even though I haven’t listened to the album in over 10 years, I still vaguely remember most of the songs. “Blind Lemon Homer! Strawberry Alarm Clock Homer!” Gah, that album was putrid.
