One of Those Days Today…

Posted by Chief Oddball on Wednesday, July 19th, 2006 in Life, Work

I can’t believe it’s almost 8:00 in the evening already. I feel like I just got up.
Last night, my mind was attacked by a sudden barrage of ideas that needed some kind of outlet, so I got up and spent a few hours working on a story. A total rewrite of a story [...]

When Shipping is Not What it Seems

Posted by Chief Oddball on Wednesday, July 19th, 2006 in Quick Takes, Rants

Here’s how Sears.com gets you to pony up for their “expedited” shipping: They claim it will take 4-6 business days to arrive, where “standard” takes a whopping 6-8. What is “expedited” shipping really? UPS 2-Day Air. That’s, uh, two business days, guys. I imagine “standard” is UPS Ground…hardly 6-8 business days!

Personal Isolationism

Posted by Chief Oddball on Wednesday, July 19th, 2006 in Rants, Stupid People

Apple was up at the salon getting her hair cut this morning when she happened to overhear the following pearl of wisdom from an old fuddy-duddy sitting nearby:

“Why are we paying for all those Americans who are getting evacuated from Lebanon? What a waste of our tax dollars! They should have known better [...]

The Restaurant Conspiracy

Posted by Chief Oddball on Sunday, July 16th, 2006 in Life, Rants

As some of you might know, my wife Apple works at a restaurant. Since we moved to Florida she’s worked at several different local eateries, and like any other workplace, each of them has had its own unique brand of drama. But I’m not sure either of us has experienced anything like what’s [...]

This is SV7

“V6, come to section J…immediately.”
Wave goodbye to V6. Oddball Update version 6, that is. Easily the shortest-lived design in Oddball history at a mere 48 days, it was retired earlier than expected due to complexity and browser incompatibilities. What originally started as a re-working of V6 to fix whatever problems people were [...]

Web Server Restored

Posted by Chief Oddball on Saturday, July 15th, 2006 in Quick Takes, Site

As a general announcement, service has now been restored to the server that hosts my email accounts and some websites, including The Art of Pooch. There should be no further interruptions related to this issue.

This Day is Not Off to a Good Start

Posted by Chief Oddball on Saturday, July 15th, 2006 in Life, Rants

So I get up early today because I’ve been planning to change the oil on my GTO this weekend. In fact I tried to do it twice already this week, but either my work schedule, the weather, or some other thing would not allow it.
I get out there and, of course, I cannot get [...]

HOA Hijinks: Just Need to Vent.

Posted by Chief Oddball on Friday, July 14th, 2006 in Rants

Today, when I really thought about one particular set of regulations we have at our HOA-managed community, I couldn’t help but find them absurd. Perhaps I’ll share my feelings about them with you.
Each of the nearly two-thousand homes in our development came with a full set of aluminum hurricane panels for storm protection, supplied [...]

So It’s Not K2…

Posted by Chief Oddball on Thursday, July 13th, 2006 in Quick Takes, Site

I just set up a Virtual PC running Windows 98, and finally got the mystery “site won’t load” problem to occur for me. I’m still not sure what’s causing it, but it’s not K2’s fault — it’s something to do with the Oddball 6.0 theme. Looks like I’ll be redesigning things around here [...]

I Knew It’d Get Me Into Trouble

Posted by Chief Oddball on Thursday, July 13th, 2006 in Site

When I last redesigned this site, I augmented the standard Wordpress engine with a special modification known as “K2.” It’s basically a theme on steroids, with built-in features like the live search, Extended Live Archives and other stuff. The trouble with K2 is that it takes more stuff into its own hands than [...]
