Yet another thing I was reminded of (this time by reading a review of Splurge elsewhere): that nifty part at the end of (I think) "Call Me What You Like" when the band interpolated the riff from "My Sharona" to end the song, which drew a smile.

Of course, one doesn't have to dig far into Puffy's catalogue to find plenty of references to other classic rock songs...

There was a freaky parking lot attendant in Miami doing that exact same screaming and yelling at his lot behind the INS building on Biscayne. I'm not quite sure what his deal was, but he kept threatening to beat people up and smash their cars, and then if they retaliated, to call the cops.

I was standing out there waiting for Apple (because the INS won't let anyone but the "alien residents" inside the office) and the parking lot dude kept trying to get me to back him up: "THAT'S RIGHT, AIN'T IT? YOU KNOW I'D DO IT!"

Heh heh, I kept nodding at the guy like, "Yep, whatever you say -- just don't kill me!"

I know something I forgot, though it has nothing to do with the concert itself...

--The crazy parking lot attendant on Congress outside of the venue angrily yelling at cars that drove by, trying to get them to park in his lot, claiming there was little room left (when the whole damn lot was practically empty). It seriously looked like he was gonna start pounding on some cars right quick if none of them parked in his lot.

Gah! No, I haven't seen that yet, but I've read about the movie (actually, I read about it on Wikipedia when I was confirming the date for that awful Ninja Turtle tour -- amazingly I remembered the 1990 date correctly on my own).

"We're coming...out of our shells..."

I'm pretty sure I still have that cassette around here somewhere, along with the classic yellow one we know and love.

Speaking of the live Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle show you once saw, have you seen this yet?

D'oh! I forgot to mention the RATT t-shirt in my post -- although I mentioned it when I emailed Bandit about the show. Whoops! And Kenji was wearing a Rolling Stones t-shirt.

Didn't KISS guy also play a snippet of "Detroit Rock City" during his introduction? It was hard to tell, since he was cracking up so badly he could hardly play the riff on his guitar. He also reminded me of Angus Young from AC/DC with his shorts and baseball cap, and leaping all over the place like a madman.

A.) You have converted me. Hell, I bought three of their CDs while I was at the concert. :D ... and haven't listened to anything else all week ... except for some Ayumi...
B.) California is GO!
C.) How can you forget Ami wearing a RATT t-shirt or the left-stage guitarist with the KISS t-shirt yelling out "I love KISS!" during his introduction?!

I hope to god that these US tours are successful. It would be so cool to see some other Japanese bands do tours over here. As unlikely as it is, I'm still hopeful.

Yeah, like I said -- I'm sure I forgot something about the concert in there somewhere (like, for example, the fact that the keyboardist from Tally Ho! looked like his dog died and he would have rather been anywhere else but at the venue -- seriously, that dude needed a shot of "Fun!" in the arm). But I think you get the general gist of things.

You know, when I was writing this monster I knew it was going to be long, but I didn't realize just how long it was until I actually posted it -- I think it's gotta be near record length! Maybe if I write some more newsposts I'll keep them under novella-length.

As for the West Coast thing, that would be awesome! Of course there's no details yet, but I happened to check out the Tofu Records forum (Tofu being Puffy's latest U.S. record distributor), and the admin there replied last month to a question about a West Coast tour this year with "definitely. nothing has been secured yet, but there will most def be a west coast tour!" Now, they didn't say this year, per se, but the original question did ask about this year. Of course, right now Puffy is onto the summer festival tour in Japan through (I think) September, so if they were to come back to the States it wouldn't be until fall or winter, I think. Still, it would be really cool for all of us to get together (in San Francisco, of all places) to go to a Puffy show!

Oh, and thanks for fixing up my images for me. For some reason when I was writing my post the editor kept rejecting the "class='alignleft'" tag. Weird.

Dude! Thanks for sprucing things up around here with the totally awesome review. Of course, your email from the other day was equally informative, but I certainly enjoyed all the little additional stuff that was mentioned here (like the cellphones in lieu of lighters bit...ha!).

I'm not actually much of a concert-goer, but it's more fun with friends, and this sounds like a damn fun time. I also prefer this kind of venue to the huge stadium affair because the latter seems too impersonal (but is obviously unavoidable with the kind of draw someone like Paul has). Perhaps a road trip is in ALL our futures. Maybe a meet-up in California? If they come to San Fran, we should meet there. Apple and I will have the one-up on you guys, since we're obviously Frisco experts having been there THREE WHOLE DAYS. LOL. To get the total Japanese experience, we can even stay at the Miyako hotel where the sound of the guests in the next room having sex in the shower is broadcast -- amplified -- through your HVAC duct.

Also, it never occurred to me that Puffy is just an iTunes launch away. I'm gonna go check out their offerings!
