We Are Mired, Mired I Say

I thought (hoped?) it was just me, but the performance of the server my web domains are hosted on has really gone to hell lately. I noticed I’ve got one vote for “Frakking Horrible Loading Times” in my sidebar poll, and I certainly don’t blame ya, because I completely agree. Such is the neverending conundrum with cheap hosting: You share a server with lots of other people. How many others is the question. Seems my server has got too many others.

This is what I know: The page loads are not being bogged down by SQL (if the queries and generation time at the bottom of each page are to be believed), and it’s not PHP’s fault either, because it happens even on static pages. In fact, the slowdown even manifests itself in the site control panel and the mail server. I’ve heard this has been happening a lot lately at the host I’m with. Sigh! Story of my life, every host I go to, the same thing ends up happening. They start out great, and end up lousy. The only variable is how much time will elapse between the two.

Hosting support says that everything seems to be loading up fine from where they are. Yeah, of course it is. So I’m probably going to switch to someone else and start all over again. Tough luck losing my business, guys. But hey, it hasn’t been a picnic for me either.

Edit: In its busiest month — January, 2006 — this site had 400 unique visitors, and a monthly bandwidth usage of under 200 MB. Just in case, y’know, anyone thinks my site is the cause of the server slowdown.
