New Feature: Comment Self-Editing

Last night Apple asked me if there was any way she could edit a comment she had just submitted to the site here. I told her that, unfortunately, there wasn’t. Only administrators can edit comments after they’re posted. But then I got to thinking, why wasn’t there such an ability? It would really make things a lot easier for people. So, I checked into it, and with a small hack, it is indeed possible.

I’m happy to announce that you can now edit your own comments within 25 minutes of submitting them, to correct spelling errors or add minor things you may have thought of shortly after hitting the button. The function checks that you are logged into Oddball Update and that your IP address matches the IP that submitted the comment in the first place, so other people can’t mess with your remarks. It’s really a feature that ought to be built into the weblog software I use, but it was an easy feature to add, so no big deal.

As always, let me know if you encounter any problems.

  1. Hi Brian

I just signed up for membership here on your site. By the way, Timeri & I are still happy to have been apart of your Wedding day (Here in the States that is).

Anyway, I read this posting and wondered if you’re familiar with Joomla?
I’m still not, but then again I’m still learning all things web developing. A techy buddy of mine uses it and it seems fairly versatile.

    Just an FYI …
    Oh - Nice Potiac GTO!
    Adios - Shai

  2. Hey Shai, glad to see you registered here! I switched you over to the Family/Friends user group so you can see all of our photos later on when I get them posted. We were certainly glad to have you as part of our wedding too, it was great of you and Timeri to come!

I had not heard of Joomla until you mentioned it, but it looks like a very nicely-done CMS. I have demoed a few open-source CMS systems in my time, and even used Xoops for a while, but never really liked any of them. Joomla is actually the first CMS I’ve seen that actually looks pretty good right out of the box — so many of them aren’t designed very well. It looks fairly easy to set up and administer, so if you’re looking to try it, I’d say go ahead and jump in!

This site here is powered by Wordpress which is more of just a blog than a CMS, but at work we often use DotNetNuke which is a CMS built for the Microsoft ASP.NET platform. It makes maintaining sites, memberships and even recurring payments very easy, but there are some things about it that are kind of a drag to use, and it can get costly to purchase modules for it. I prefer the open-source side of the fence myself, but it’s great to get exposure to both.

Hey, thanks for the nice words about my new car. :D I’m really stoked about getting it here; right now it’s still at the dealer awaiting a body kit install which will made it look even MEANER! Apple and I would love for you and Timeri to come down and visit us sometime; we won’t have our new house until late ‘06 / early ‘07, but I’m sure we could work something out in the meantime. It’d be great to hang out with both of you!

  3. the car is TEH HOTTNESS. Wow…very impressive.

I’ll just let my mouth hang open in slackjawed amazement, as I know next to nothing about cars other than the fact that they look purdy.

your car effing ROCKS. Good show, good man.

and BTW…save the date…10-27-07…Reaper and I are getting married.

  4. Hey, all right! CONGRATULATIONS to you both! Sweet! I will most certainly add it to my calendar right now so I don’t schedule anything for that timeframe. Have you got a venue picked out yet? Well — I’m sure there will be plenty of time for planning! :D Congrats again, that’s awesome!

Thanks for the kind words about my new car too. I just spent the last four hours in it coming home, and the seats are so good I never got tired of sitting in it. Or maybe that’s just my enthusiasm overriding my nerve endings. Either way, the car rocks. Now I get to go out there and clean the highway bugs off it. Tally-ho!

  5. Church, yes, venue, no. Working on that…once we book a venue, we’ll leave the wedding alone for a while and focus on getting a house =D =D =D

    we’ll keep you posted!
