Oddball Update

Weird, random wackiness. That today’s post is. Huh? Okay, now I sound like Yoda. Or as Frank Oz described it, old-style Jedi speak. Like ye olde English.

I just spent the last ten minutes hooking up a new uninterruptible power supply in my room, since I have way more devices than my existing 1500VA UPS with 8 outlets could support. I thought that was frightening in and of itself, until I learned that one of my colleagues has eight UPS’s in one room alone. So no, I don’t think I’m anywhere near the danger zone. And when I look at my rat’s nest of cables and think I have a lot of crappy wiring going on back there, I just think about his room — with literally wall-to-wall cables snaking this way and that — and I feel better. It’s like imaginary Thorazine.

Interestingly, the whole time I was hooking up the UPS, I was singing “Super drafting jerkweed…Fragster Smith!” along to the old “Mega Man” TV show theme. I truly am a disturbed individual.

So this same colleague who has eight UPS’s just ordered the complete set of MAME ROMs — yep, 10 DVDs worth — plus the entire library of ROMs for NES, SNES, Genesis, Master System, even Commodore 64/128 and every Atari deck ever made. Talk about sweet. He’s going to dump the entire thing onto one of those USB2 hard drives so I can make my own copy, and in the meantime I’m getting the MAME engine set up with a nice frontend as well as emulators for all of those old console systems. I used to play around with that stuff quite often, so it shouldn’t be difficult to round up all that software. The guy says he wants to put together one of those full upright arcade cabinets that plays every console/arcade title ever made.

I’m off to design some business cards. Woo-hoo.
