Off Hiatus
Okay, so I’ve been real busy lately. I’m still busy, in fact, so posting might continue to be sparse, but I thought I should at least write an update on what’s been happening lately.
Apple and I signed the contract on our new house yesterday, officially beginning our journey down the road of new home construction. It’ll be at least a year before we close, possibly not even ’till early 2007, but I’m honestly not in a hurry — the longer it takes, the more money we can expect to get for our current house what with prices skyrocketing in this area. I’m continually impressed by the staff at Gulfstream Homes. They’re all consistently great to work with. They even gave us a nice gift basket yesterday after signing.
I went with a friend/colleague this past Sunday to see Serenity, the feature film adaptation of the failed TV series Firefly. This is one of those cult sci-fi shows that people either love or hate (but most people seem to love), and that not a lot of people saw. It aired in primetime on Fox back in 2002, but apparently was cancelled before the pilot even aired, for reasons which still aren’t known. I figure, hey, it’s Fox. They cancel everything. Plus, three years ago, they were probably wanting to free up time slots for another low-budget reality show that wouldn’t cost them as much as a space opera.
Anyway, back to the movie — it was phenomenal, and I’m hoping that the producers meet their sales projections which will automatically greenlight a second and third film. Frankly, I wish they’d just put the series back on TV, like on the Sci-Fi Channel, and continue the story. Unfortunately, in the movie they killed off one of the best characters from the show, so that’d be a gaping void to fill in the unlikely event that it did come back to TV. Anyway, I have to say, I haven’t been so thrilled with a sci-fi feature film since Star Trek VI, so that was cool.
What else? Well, the Trans Am seems to be slowly leaking a mysterious fluid onto the garage floor. It’s kinda golden in color, thicker than water but thinner than oil, and smells sweet. I think it’s coolant. When I had the cooling system drained and refilled in July, I had gold class coolant put in instead of that categorically awful Dexcool red stuff. I didn’t get to see the coolant by itself, but the stuff on the coolant dipstick is similar in consistency. I’m gonna have to drive the car up on ramps, look under there and see if I can find out where it’s dripping from.
Things are real hectic at work; we’ve got to execute a complete corporate identity change at the parent company of the group I work for, and I’m the “it” guy for all that marketing and corporate image stuff. There’s some conflict between our company name and some trademarked product name another corporation uses, and we have until the end of October to change everything over before they…I dunno, probably take legal action of some kind. Everything was going fine until the other day. I spent the first two weeks of the month recreating the site, and had actually just about finished it, when it became apparent that the instructions I was given on this process were gonna end up not working in the end, and that we’d have to do it a different way. Which means starting over. At least I can re-use a lot of what I’ve already done, but that just pisses me off. God.
Speaking of work, the web design proposal I sent out to a local company came back approved, with a budget of between $2,000 and $2,500. Now I’m waiting on materials and content from the client before we can get started. Yep, my friends and I will be working on this one together, and it should net us some decent cash, from a corporate entity which will actually PAY ON TIME, as opposed to certain clients we know and loathe. Personally, I’m hoping to take home enough of a cut to order the center gauge pod for my GTO (it costs about $500).
The O’Day Slice of Good News: If all goes according to plan, my new GTO will be assembled this week. TPW is 10/17, which is Monday, but I’d be grateful if they’d wait till, say, Wednesday to build it, so the linemen would be sober.
I remember being pretty damn obsessed with my ‘98 during the six months between when I placed the order and when I received it, but jeeze, I don’t remember being this preoccupied, heh heh. I guess I was. It’s just a feeling I haven’t experienced in a long time, that of a new car on its way.
Okay, I’m outta here for today. I’ll see if I can eke out some time to post more often this month, but realistically the rest of October is gonna be pretty busy.
