Rick Wagoner Has The Answer!

…To all of GM’s problems! And it is: THE GM CORPORATE BADGE!
That’s correct: As his first move after taking over leadership of North American operations, GM CEO Rick Wagoner has declared that starting in 2006, all brand-new and recently-introduced GM vehicles will feature on each side a small square badge embossed with the GM logo, positioned behind the front wheels and between the rocker and glass line. (See photo at left for an example.)
Apparently, GM is doing this in response to “surveys and studies conducted by private firms” which reveal that—get this—“consumers seek closer identity with the brands behind their favorite products.” Yeah—except that the brand behind my one-time favorite products is PONTIAC, not GM!
I really don’t understand how all the money spent on whipping up these goofy badges is going to benefit GM whatsoever. At this point, don’t they need to watch every penny they spend? Isn’t this move counter-productive? And will Corvette or XLR buyers really want that badge tacked onto their fenders?
