John DeLorean

John DeLorean

John DeLorean, the man responsible for starting the muscle car craze by creating the Pontiac GTO in 1964, died yesterday at age 80.

After trying (and failing) to convince Pontiac Motor Division to let him build a two-seat sports car (he even attempted to use the Firebird as the vehicle for this fantasy of his), he finally left GM and started his own company to accomplish that longtime goal. Thus the DeLorean DMC-12 (pictured above) was born. Unfortunately for Mr. DeLorean, his company was in dire financial straits by the early eighties, and he hatched a plan to salvage it by selling a huge amount of cocaine. The cops busted him. DMC went under. And DeLorean became a footnote in history.

A reorganized DeLorean Motor Company still exists today, providing parts and service for DMC-12 owners.
