Every Day Is Somebody’s Birthday, Yeah…

All right, I’m 25 today. The first thing I noticed is that the PHP script on the colophon sidebar has updated itself to reflect as much, so at least I know it’s working. Between last night and this morning I’ve mostly been making sure everything is squared away with my web server move, and it appears that everything went according to plan, at least with this site, and the email and FTP settings.

So far the day is off to a good start. A bunch of folks at the office are taking me out to lunch today since it’s my birthday. This year they actually made a big deal out of it; normally I don’t tell anybody, and nobody asks. But lately I’ve been doing a lot of work for this particular department, and they’re all really great people, so they took it upon themselves to do something for me. That’s awesome.

I realize I haven’t posted here much lately, so here’s a recap. I had Monday (President’s Day) off, which made it a three-day weekend, and a great one at that. I did tons of work on a soundtrack project I’ve been putting together, and basically got it completed. I also got the Mazda6 washed, polished with Zaino Z-2, and its oil changed. The oil change was an interesting story, because Apple and I had to drive all over town to find a place with a recovery tank I could dump the used oil in. We also picked up a birthday cake while we were out. tongue laugh The local supermarket chain has the best bakery. Now, at least, it appears I have found the cake alluded to so long ago.

The bikini website guy broke a new record this morning. He sent me a 45 megabye email. It was an attached zipfile full of high-res pictures. It really couldn’t have happened at a better time, though, because my email accounts had just propagated over to my new web server, whereupon I no longer have a limit on the attachment size (whether that’s good or bad remains to be seen), and the server is not as apt to die as my old one. If I hadn’t switched hosts, I would never have gotten that email.

Of course, the acquisition of these long-awaited pictures just means I’ll have to go to work on that site now, but I really want to get it done. When those obligations are over, I probably ought to reformat my system…it’s been two years since that happened, and it acts funky now and again…but overall, Windows XP has allowed me to do something I was never able to do with Win98, and that’s run the OS for more than 10-12 months without completely grinding to a halt. I had problems with Win2k too, although it was better—but that was probably due mostly to the crappy KX133 box I had it running on.

This weekend we’re journeying northward to Orlando for a long weekend at Disney World. We’re gonna eat at the Canadian restaurant for dinner on Sunday evening. I love that place. They serve you these warm, soft pretzel breadsticks that I can’t get enough of. Okay, yes, I keep talking about the breadsticks, which as far as I know are not distinctly Canadian. So sue me.

The other night, Apple and I saw Collateral, that movie where Tom Cruise plays some kind of hit man. (Not Collateral Damage, that awful Ahhhhnold movie whose inane plot I won’t even recap here.) The film was pretty good, a bit slow at the start, and a lot weird at the end, but in between it was a good time. It had the most spectacular car wreck I’ve seen in quite a while, complete with some really spiff-tastic sound effects that I immediately ripped to a digital file on my computer. Overall I’d recommend it, but it’s most likely not a movie I’d be hankerin’ to watch a second time.

Let’s see…what else is going on? Well, the keyfob I carry for my Trans Am died today. It unlocked the car this morning when I went to work, but when I got there, it had ceased to function entirely. This means I have to unlock the door with the key, which is not a problem except for the fact that if you do that, the alarm system goes off in five seconds unless you put the key in the ignition and turn it. I have another keyfob at home I’ll have to test; I’m hoping it just a bad battery, even though I replaced it not long ago (with one I pilfered from the Vibe’s keyfob before they totaled the car, no less).

Man, I have been really enjoying going for bike rides every day after work. As soon as I get home I immediately go out, stop at the town center to get the mail, and then choose some random, indirect route to ride back on. It’s fun because (unlike our local road system) our community is full of paths, bridges, interconnecting streets and trails that all meet up with each other, so you can always take a different way home if you want. I find myself randomly choosing on a split-second’s notice which way to turn, since I know I can always find my way to my destination no matter which way I go. I’ve already lost three pounds from all the exercise, too. Can’t beat that.

All right, time to get going—I just wanted to have something up on this site today, seeing as how A) it’s my birthday and B) I’m on a new server and all. In the near future I’m planning a couple of feature extensions for this site that will allow me to talk about other stuff too, but that will all happen in due time.
