Gamer’s Holiday

Good stuff! I’ve been approved for a full day off tomorrow. This will enable me to take KITT in for some repairs at a time when traffic won’t be so bad. It will also enable me to celebrate my inner geekhood by playing and enjoying the hell out of Halo 2, which is going on sale tonight at 12:01 a.m.

Now that I’ve had my vacation day approved, I’m still trying to decide whether to attend the midnight sale. I want the game for tomorrow, but is it worth going down to the mall at midnight and waiting in a silly-ass line? I dunno. Part of me says “no.” But the other part says that I really don’t have anything to do tonight anyway so I might as well. Which side will win out? That probably won’t be decided until tonight at around 9:00, truth be told. I’m figuring that if I’m going tonight, I should leave early, otherwise I might wind up at the tail end of a big line and won’t get home until 2 a.m. or some crap. That wouldn’t be too good. On the other hand, I figure it’ll only be the hardcore gamers down there at that hour, since mommies and daddies won’t even entertain the thought of waiting in line at midnight for an instant.

It’s been a pretty quiet day at work. Got some big work done on a survey, which we have shipped off to the client for an initial review. Beyond that, not much is really going on. I’d really like to get out of here right now; perhaps I can…

Whoa.

Okay, it’s now exactly one hour later. The exact instant that I typed the words “not much is really going on,” I received the first of many emails that would quickly begin to pour in and keep me busy for the past 60 minutes. Now that that’s finished, I’m getting back to this entry, and hopefully wrapping it up!

The good thing about suddenly getting a load of work to do is that it has a nice way of “advancing the timeline,” hence the workday is now almost complete. I believe that just before I was interrupted, I was typing a sentence to the effect of “perhaps I can slip out of here a bit early today.” Like at 5:00 or slightly thereafter. Who knows. We shall see. A lot of people are out today, including the noisy-ass forgetful sales fuck who so often gives me just cause to terminate my own existence, so it’s been even quieter than usual. That’s always appreciated.

Cookies! There were cookies in the kitchen! Whoa, baby! Cookies!

So tonight I’m having chili for dinner. Mmm, mmm. After simmering slowly in a crock pot all afternoon, it’ll be time to chow down on that beefy goodness. Oh! Speaking of beef! I got the most awesome roast beef at the grocery store this weekend. Down here they sell Boar’s Head meats at all the local stores, and said company just introduced what they call “Londonport” roast beef. The stuff tastes like a juicy, marinated steak. I’ve never had cold cuts that good before in my life. Fortunately there’s plenty for another two days’ worth of sandwiches, including a hearty meal AT HOME tomorrow, which is gonna be good. I’ll probably eat it on the floor while I’m laying in front of the HDTV capping Covenant.

Mother fucker! I just got another request in my email. Now I have to go look at the staging server for a client’s site and somehow, in just a few minutes, look through all the bullshit legacy 1997-vintage XML crap in there and see if I think it’s likely that the 2-3 day estimate we gave the client for a redesign is appropriate. This, ladies and gentlemen, is quite possibly the most boring assignment I’ve ever had. So, I’m off to complete it. Bye now.
